Who would have thought that one crazy man could attempt to provoke religious war in the 21st century? While all the developed and developing countries shifted their points of interest to economic growth and stability, science, space projects, Turkey’s president Erdogan decided to roll back the country into the Medieval ages and start a Muslim “crusade” against France.
If we look at the overall situation closely, we’ll definitely see no one benefits from this situation but Turkey that is already in a very weak economic situation, political tensions grow hourly and people start questioning whether he is the right leader for Turkey while foreigners pull away their investments fearing Turkey’s soon collapse. And now Erdogan makes a move that could unite Muslims all over the world, but things are not this straightforward.
Turkey is a secular state, for which is not popular among other Muslim countries and not supported publicly. When Erdogan started faced political crisis, he made a move to gain the heart of the Muslim world and turned a world famous christian church Hagia Sophia, dating back to the year 537 A.C., into a Mosque; a move that shocked the whole Christian world instead. But Erdogan didt this only because he desperately needed to save Turkey’s economy from falling even more; otherwise would he go against UNESCO and most of the Western countries with he has been trying to set good relations all of these almost 20 years? This wasn’t an act of love towards Mohammed but a cynical act of “licking boots” of Muslims.
Despite this “glorious” victory, the Gulf countries did not change their attitude toward Turkey and especially Erdogan. In September this year Saudi Arabia put a non-official ban to all Turkish products because of Erdogan’s arrogance and unfriendly behaviour. Turkish political interference in countries of the Middle East is the reason behind the boycott of Turkish products.
Morocco and Algeria also joined the non-official boycott of Turkish products, and #boycottTurkey quickly became a popular hash-tag among the Internet users. In a situation when the country experiences severe economic crisis, Turkish geopolitics fails in Libya, Syria, Greece, Cyprus and now in Artsakh, Erdogan understands that he has to do something to gain some allies. Then the terrifying case with the French teacher comes in handy. Erdogan clearly uses the moment to show the Muslim world that he is a loyal Muslim and can unite all Muslims in a Muslim “crusade” against the Western world.
However, if Erdogan did really care of Muslims, why would he choose to remain silent when the bombing attack was carried out on a mosque in Pakistan on Tuesday this week, killing at least eight students and wounding 136 others? This just illustrates how cynical Erdogan can be when it comes to gaining points for its rating and how he sees Islam rather a tool for his dirty politics than a religion he faithfully believes in. What he really cares about is his throne rather than Muslims around the Globe. Let’s face it, Erdogan doesn’t care of the Muslim world at all.
